Gordon Steinert Becker è deceduto all'età di 82 anni in Asheville, N.C., il 18 febbraio 2015. Era nato il 22 aprile 1932 a Brooklyn, New York da Herman F. e Ruth S. Becker. Ha abitato ad Asheville negli ultimi 26 anni.

Gordon era iscritto al "Brooklyn College" dell'università della città di New York, quando ha dovuto arruolarsi nell'esercito USA durante la guerra di Corea. Dopo il servizio militare è ritornato agli studi nel "Brooklyn College" conseguendo nel 1957 la laurea in geologia con il sostegno statale per i veterani di guerra. In tale università ha conosciuto la donna della sua vita, Luisa Giovane, che avrebbe poi sposato nel giugno del 1957 e insieme si sono trasferiti nella zona di Washington D.C., dove ha potuto intraprendere la carriera quale impiegato civile del governo federale USA con l'esercito per le riproduzioni topografiche, diventando esperto programmatore di software. Nel 1967 è passato alle dipendenze della DIA quale esperto dei sistemi informativi e vi è rimasto fino al 1987 dopo aver raggiunto il titolo di capo del reparto Risorse e Divisione della stessa Agenzia DIA.

Dopo essersi ritirato dall'impiego con lo stato, Gordon è stato fino al 1989 vicepresidente esecutivo dell'Elgin Group Ltd. (esperti di sistemi di computer e informativi per la sicurezza). Dopo quest'ultimo incarico lui e la moglie si sono trasferiti ad Asheville, dove il suo amore per gli animali l'ha portato a impegnarsi quale volontario nell'associazione "Amici degli animali" di Buncombe County (attualmente "Asheville Humane Society"). Ha trascorso diversi anni portando a passeggio i cani, pulendo le cucce e svolgendo altre attività. Per questo ha ottenuto nel 1995 il riconoscimento di "Volunteer of The Year Award". Per sei anni ha fatto parte del comitato direttori della BCFFA, ricoprendo l'incarico di presidente in diversi comitati e quale membro di tanti altri. In seguito a questo ha mantenuto per quattro anni la presidenza dell'associazione "Animal Haven" di Asheville.

Gordon è stato membro del comitato direttori del "Civitan Club" di Asheville, della società "Preservation Society" di Asheville, della compagnia "Symphony Guild", dei club "Asheville Rifle and Pistol" e "French Broad Rifles muzzle-loading" e della lega "American Civil Liberties Union" (A.C.L.U.); inoltre è stato membro attivo dell'associazione "National Rifle Association" e fiero membro e sostenitore del partito democratico.

Gordon è deceduto in casa assistito dalla moglie dopo una coraggiosa battaglia contro il tumore. Restano sua moglie Luisa dopo quasi 58 anni passati accanto a lui; il figlio Anthony con la moglie Rebecca Judge di Northfield dal Minnesota e i loro figli Emily (Minneapolis) e Cameron (Northfield); la figlia Elvira Wolk col marito Jonathan e il loro bambino Logan da Ashburn in Virginia. Resta anche nella memoria dei suoi fratelli Kenneth ed Eugene e dei loro figli.

Un grazie ai tanti amici stretti avuti nel corso degli anni passati in una delle più cordiali città della nazione: Asheville nella Carolina del Nord.

I funerali si terranno venerdì 6 marzo 2015 con inizio alle ore 14.00 nel cimitero dei veterani della Caroline dell'Ovest in 962 in Old US 70 Highway, Black Mountain, N.C. Invece di portare fiori la famiglia si permette di suggerire una donazione nella memoria di Gordon all'associazione "Animal Haven" di Asheville o ad un'altra a propria scelta per l'assistenza degli animali.

Gordon Steinert Becker, age 82, of Asheville, N.C., passed away on February 18, 2015. Gordon was born April 22, 1932, in Brooklyn, New York, to Herman F. and Ruth S. Becker. He was a resident of Asheville for the past 26 years.

Gordon enrolled in Brooklyn College (College of the City of New York) following high school. He entered the service of his country during the Korean War and served with the U. S. Army, Ordinance Corp. Following military service, he returned to Brooklyn College, earning a bachelor's degree in geology in 1956 with financial help from the G. I. bill. It was in college that he met the love of his life, Louise Giovane. They married in June 1957 and together they moved to the Washington D. C. area so Gordon could start his career as a civilian employee with the federal government at the U. S. Army Map Service. At Army Map he became a software development expert and computer program designer in machine language programming. In 1967 Gordon moved to the Defense Intelligence Agency to continue his career in intelligence information systems design. He retired in 1987 as Chief of the Resources and Systems Division with the DIA.

Upon his retirement from government service, Gordon took a position with Elgin Group Ltd. (specialists in computer and information systems security studies) as Executive Vice President. He retired from Elgin in 1989 and he and Louise moved to Asheville. His love for animals prompted him to become an active volunteer with the Buncombe County Friends for Animals (now the Asheville Humane Society). Several years were spent walking dogs, cleaning cages and performing other shelter activities, earning him the "Volunteer of The Year Award" in 1995. He served six years on the BCFFA Board of Directors where he served as chairman of several committees and a member on several others. Following this association with BCFFA he was offered the presidency of Animal Haven of Asheville, a position he held for four years.

Gordon is a former member of the Board of Directors of the Asheville Civitan Club, a member of the Asheville Preservation Society, Symphony Guild, Asheville Rifle and Pistol Club, French Broad Rifles muzzle-loading club, American Civil Liberties Union. (A.C.L.U.), life member of the National Rifle Association, and a proud member and supporter of the Democratic Party.

Gordon passed away at home with his wife at his side following a courageous battle with cancer. Surviving are his loving wife of nearly 58 years, Louise; son Anthony Becker and his wife Rebecca Judge of Northfield, Minnesota, grandchildren Emily (Minneapolis) and Cameron (Northfield) Judge-Becker; and daughter Elvira Wolk, her husband Jonathan, and grandson Logan of Ashburn, Virginia. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, and his brothers, Kenneth Becker and Eugene Becker.

He and his family are most thankful for the multitude of close friends accumulated over the years in one of the friendliest of cities in the nation: Asheville, North Carolina.

A Celebration of Life and internment will be held beginning at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 6, 2015, at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, 962 Old US 70 Highway, Black Mountain, N.C. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Gordon's memory to the Animal Haven of Asheville or an animal welfare organization of your choice.
